Clinical Trials Can Be an Amazing Way to Earn Lots of Money with Very Little Effort

Everyone who’s gone into the store to get something for their headache will probably have noticed a long list of possible side effects on the bottle. But few people know that those side effects were all something reported by people within a clinical trial for that medication. And even fewer people know that every one of the people making those reports was highly compensated for their efforts. But to understand how to earn money from a clinical trial one must first understand a little bit about what they actually are.

Before medications can be sold they first need to demonstrate two things. They need to be proven safe, and they need to be proven effective for the treatment of a recognized illness or disorder. Both of these factors are tied together within the overall process of developing new medications. While there’s exceptions, in general drug development follows a standard path. It starts with theory, when researchers come up with an idea of how they might cause a positive change within a biological system. Next, the drug is created and tested on animals. One of the most important parts of that stage comes from the fact that it suggests whether a medication is safe or not. There’s exceptions, but if a medication isn’t harmful to multiple mammalian species than it probably won’t have overly severe reactions with humans either. This stage will also target specific illness or the closest analog to that illness within a particular animal population. The researchers are then left with a drug which they know is probably safe and which they hope will be effective in treating an ailment. But they won’t know how effective, and they won’t know about side effects which animals can’t communicate. Animals can’t, for example, pass on whether they’re getting headaches after taking a new medication. So for that the researchers need to hire people to participate in drug trials.

There’s a huge amount of variation in any given clinical trial. This also means that qualifications and requirements will vary as well. In general they’re looking for two different types of people. One group of healthy people who can take a medication and report whether it produces negative side effects. And another will be people who have a specific illness which the researchers are hoping to treat. For the purposes of earning money in a study one can assume membership in the healthy group.

It’s quite common for researchers to try to find volunteers online. But if one lives in a town with a research hospital or large university than it’s usually also easy to find opportunities by simply keeping an eye out for them. It’s very common for studies to recruit locally by simply putting up fliers and the like on community billboards at the supermarket. After that one can call or write for more information. The easiest studies will simply allow one to live a normal life while occasionally taking a new medication while reporting on it. Other studies might require one to actually live within a hospital environment for weeks or even months. In general one can assume that the level of disruption in one’s life will go along with a huge increase in how much the researchers are willing to pay. For example, coming in once a week to try out a variation on an existing headache medication probably won’t pay very much. Putting in a large amount of hours every week to test out something more unique will usually pay quite a bit more. While people can conceivably make a very good living by being willing to have IV drugs tested on them within a hospital setting over a prolonged period of time. And quite a few people do love the idea of being able to help save lives and earn a lot of money by simply sitting in bed for a while.
