Have you ever thought about creating your own product to sell but you don’t want the hassle of dealing with physical products and trying to find somewhere to store them or you don’t have access to the resources or tools to sell a product?  The good news is that this fact alone doesn’t have to stop you because as long as you have an idea, you can sell your own product.  How?  In the form of an online course.

Yes, many are using technology to be savvy in creating their own products in digital format.  You can do it too.  I will explain exactly what you need to create your own course, how to set it up, the different platforms that you can use, and even how to promote it online so that you can be successful with your online course.

What you should do first

The very first thing you need to do is to come up with a topic or subject that you would like to create a course on.  It could be anything that you have a passion for, knowledge in, are good at, or have found a better way to do something that could save others time and energy.  You could even start an online course about your own personal experiences and give practical tips on how to lose weight, be a savvy shopper, or anything else you can think of.

You will need to write out your course in the form of an outline with a main subject or topic in mind, title, and subtitles to support your course.  Write out a rough draft and include any steps and tips in your notes that you want to share with your students.  You have now overcome your first hurdle.  Once you have come up with your topic for your course and completed your outline, you are now ready to create it.

Here are some tools you may need to create your course

  • photos
  • slide presentation software
  • recording screen
  • webcam
  • microphone
  • article (optional)

Your course could be composed of a download that just contains text or an interactive experience for your students that includes slides and presentation software with images to make your course more enjoyable and memorable.

Where can you get these tools for your course?

You can get them for free by going to Google Slides to create your slide presentation software, Pexels or Pixabay for free images, ScreenCast-o-Matic to record your computer screen, and access to Wordpad or Open Office Portable to include articles that you have saved to a pdf file.

What should I include in my course?

You can include slide presentations in your course and explain to the student how to execute what you have just said, articles in the form of a list to show them what is needed, and/or photos with adjoining text.  This helps you to focus your thoughts clearly and keeps you on topic.

Where can I sell my course?

There are several places where you can sell your course online.  Udemy is one platform that has an embedded audience of students ready to learn various subjects and topics that would be ready to take your course.  Remember that by using a resource that you do not own, you will have to share some of your commission and earnings with the company.  Udemy does give you the option to offer coupons and discounts for people to take your course, where you get to keep most of your earnings but they still get paid too.  Another advantage of using Udemy is that they will promote your course for free and they have an affiliate program that others can join to promote your course as well.

If you decide to sell your course on your blog, you get to keep all of your earnings and not have to split or share them with anyone else.  You can acquire a blog from Bluehost and use a course theme for your blog or download and install a plugin for online courses.  Either way would work fine. You could also use a site called Sellfy to sell your course or digital products online.  It is super-easy to use and takes just a few minutes of your time.

How much money can I make with my online course?

The answer to that question is really up to you.  It really depends on how much you sell your course for, how effective it is, whether other people tell others about your course, how well you promote it and if it is easy to access it online.  I have made over $2,200 to date with my 2 online courses on Udemy which is money that I would not have earned without having an online course.  In fact, I can count on some extra cash every single month from my online courses.  You can my earnings below.

How can I promote my online courses?

One of the best ways to do this is with social media.  I highly recommend Pinterest because it is one of the most visited sites online right now.  Everyone is using Pinterest to discover new recipes, decor tips, ways of doing this and so much more.  One of the reasons that Pinterest is so effective is because it is visually stimulating.  It is able to capture the viewer’s attention in a very unique way.

In order to use Pinterest, you must create an account, preferably a business account (which is free), and start creating pins to post on your board from your online course.  I use Canva and the other free photo sites that I mentioned above to do this.  You can see my Pinterest board here.  You can also use sites like Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms, and online communities and include your course in your signature, share your course to your YouTube subscribers (if you have a YouTube channel), or contact a popular YouTuber and pay them to promote your course.  You can also promote your course offline with flyers, newspaper advertisements, and more.

Is creating an online course worth it?

Absolutely!  You will not regret the decision you made to have your own product that you can sell to others.  If you spend the time developing your course to make the best product possible, you will reap the benefits of all your hard work!  Not only will you feel good about it but you can make a direct impact in other people’s lives for the good.  The other advantage to having your own online course is that you will continue to earn income as long as your course is available online to reach potentially hundreds or thousands of students.  Don’t limit yourself to one thing, give it a try because it may prove to be the best decision you ever made.

Please feel free to share your comments or tips if you have ever created your own online course or are planning to do so.
